Calling around Covington
Piqua Daily Call – May 12, 2008                                               Nancy Palser

New signs give pleasing look

The weather has cooperated with the village and the Chamber of Commerce to get the new village signs up giving a first-class impression and welcome to people coming into town.

The promoters of this project were Tim Weikert of General Films, Inc. and Jay Wackler, President of the Chamber of Commerce.  Many people worked very diligently on this project and the results are pleasing to the eyes.

After several revisions the finished sign board represents a fort.  This will remind everyone this is the home of Fort Rowdy.  All five signs that were erected beside the roads entering Covington were donated by General Films, Inc. on West U.S. Route 36 by the village park, Covington Fraternal Order of Eagles Post 3998 on East U.S. 36 and north State Route 48 and the last two given by New Tech and HealthCare Pharmacy on south State Route 48 and east State Route 41.

Plaques with the names of organizations, Civic Clubs, Churches and Veterans Organizations are displayed on each sign to show that Covington is a busy and proud town.  A light over each sign will bring attention to those coming into town that they are entering the Village of Covington as stated across the top.

Members of the Chamber of Commerce and Jay Wackler would like to thank Bob Kendig and the Covington Street Department who took down the old signs, Joe Paxson who took the old name plates off and returned them to their owners and the Kenworthy family of Ebberts Field Seeds Inc. for allowing the sign to be placed on their property.  Last the council will be thankful to the village of Covington if the lights on the signs become a part of the street lights.

A special thank you goes to Tim Weikert for his encouragement to tackle this project and see it through.  I am sure the Chamber of Commerce will be happy to hear from each of you as to your thoughts on the new signs.
